Leading the Northeast Kingdom in Ergonomics

Power your people and profit.

Did you know that a direct correlation exists between staff wellness and the success of your organization? Formula Z knows. The Formula Z Trade Name was, after all, founded by health care practitioner, Ben McCormack, the owner and president of Northern Physical Therapy. In any business or organization there exists a balance between gains and losses. This balance often runs on tight lines in even the most well managed facilities. The two variables management tends to think about are supply and demand. If the demand for widgets exists, and the organization can supply them at a reasonable price, then the organization should remain profitable, right? It’s as simple as X and Y. However, managers and owners have experienced otherwise, and we know that it’s rarely this simple. There is usually a “Z” variable in the mix. The Z variable siphons skilled labor and money out of the organization in the form of injury, lost time, poor conditioning, low morale, faulty ergonomic layout, and incomplete training processes. Many organizations find themselves punished by the effects of an overwhelming Z variable, feeling like they have little control over lost time incidence, bad decisions, and their own “bad luck.” The Truth: Your company can do better. Formula Z guides your team to greater success by implementing proven methodology to control the Z variable. Formula Z helps you better your organization by building a stronger, more able workforce enabling you to contain your losses and boost your business! Formula Z is here to help.

One wrong hire or confusing situation with an employee can cause severe turbulence within your organization. In 2015 the state of Vermont reported that the average cost of a single worker’s compensation was $55,000. Many work-related claims are filed within the first six weeks of the new employee's start date. Imagine how much better your bottom line could be if your hiring process helped you avoid just one of these expensive claims! Most risk and human resource experts are fearful of screening new hires thoroughly, given past nightmarish lawsuit tales involving the Americans with Disabilities Amendments Act (ADAA) and the Equal Employment Opportunity Council (EEOC). The truth is, you have the right to test new hires in order to assure that they can safely perform the essential functions of the job--but the law requires that you follow due process. Formula Z professionals can guide you through this process, and even complete parts of it for you. We have extensive knowledge of ADAA case law, and we strive to educate our clients on their rights and responsibilities. Many organizations will offer to test your new hires for you; unfortunately, the majority do not understand the written law and legal ramifications themselves. So, when a mistake is made, guess who pays for it? You do. Formula Z professionals understand the law and what is at stake for you. We work closely alongside your management team and staff in establishing valid job descriptions, essential functions, and physical demands. We then use this information to develop, validate, and conduct a testing process for your company. We complete all end of the year testing to guard against discrimination, and we guide you through the process of Reasonable Accommodation when necessary. With Formula Z, we can help protect your organization by constructing a better hiring process.

Formula Z’s Better Bodies program is an invaluable tool for injury prevention. Our licensed health care providers are able to work directly with employees, addressing basic musculoskeletal strain issues. The key to the Better Bodies program is our focus on educating your employees, so that they can take ownership of both work and non-work related discomfort by increasing their knowledge of its causes. This proactive approach aims to improve morale, reduce reportable injuries, and ultimately lower any insurance modifier ratings that are above the desired value. While the Better Bodies wellness program is simple, it is perhaps the most powerful tool that Formula Z offers its clients.

The “E” word has been used too loosely over the last decade. You can even purchase ergonomic shoes now, whatever those are! Formula Z professionals prefer to define ergonomics simply; it is the science of fitting jobs to people. Companies usually report that one or two tasks seem to account for a majority of their work-related injuries. Risk assessment evaluations are useful in this situation because the evaluator can identify problems and make recommendations to mitigate the associated risks. Formula Z’s Certified Ergonomic Evaluation Specialists observe movement patterns and collect data such as force measures, frequency, distance, coupling, and the work environment. That information is entered into professional risk assessment tools, enabling the evaluator to quantify and prioritize risk for the different aspects of the job. Recommendations are then made to help limit risk, without having a negative effect on productivity!
